Choosing the right soap mold is one of the most practical decisions a soap maker makes. A mold that is too small means you cannot meet demand. A mold that is too large means wasted effort and ingredients.
Calculating Mold Volume
The volume of your mold determines how much batter you can pour. For a rectangular mold, multiply length by width by height. For a cylindrical mold, use pi times radius squared times height.
Shape Considerations
Rectangular molds are the most versatile and widely available. They produce traditional bar shapes and are easy to line. Cylindrical molds produce round soaps that are visually distinctive but harder to unmold.
Estimating Bar Count
Once you know the mold volume, estimate the number of bars by dividing the total batter weight by the weight of each individual bar. Standard soap bars weigh approximately 100-120 grams.
Mold Material and Cost
Silicone molds are the most popular choice for serious soap makers. They are flexible, durable, and easy to unmold. Wood molds are inexpensive but require lining. PVC molds offer a middle ground.

For beginners, a 10x10x7 inch rectangular mold is ideal. It produces approximately 20-25 bars per batch. For larger production, consider 12x12x9 inch molds or multiple smaller molds.
